Berber Jewelry of Morocco: A Journey to Aït Benhaddou in Search of Authentic Treasures

Across the Atlas Mountains

Morning begins early in Marrakech. The city has barely awakened when we set off on the road towards the Atlas Mountains.

Gradually, the noise of the medina falls behind. The streets grow quieter and the landscape begins to change: red earth, sparse trees, rocky hills and an immense, open sky.

The farther the road takes us, the stronger the feeling that we are travelling not only through space, but through time — towards the landscapes once crossed by ancient caravans on their way across the Sahara.

The landscape becomes harsher, yet somehow even more beautiful.

At times, it seems that nothing here has changed for centuries.

Then, suddenly, the earthen towers of Aït Benhaddou appear on the horizon — a settlement that seems to have risen from the very earth on which it stands.

Aït Benhaddou: The Ancient Berber Ksar

Aït Benhaddou is one of Morocco’s best-known ksour. Built from earth and clay, these fortified settlements once served as protected communities along important trading routes.

For centuries, caravans passed through these valleys carrying gold, salt, textiles and precious goods. Trade brought not only materials and wealth, but also new forms of craftsmanship, ornament and jewelry.

In Search of Jewelry

On one of the narrow streets of the village, we discovered a small shop. Its pink walls were almost completely covered with jewelry: metal pendants, old amulets and substantial necklaces strung with coral beads.

Some pieces looked as though they had already lived a long life.

Silver softened by the patina of time, glass and coral beads, unusual pendant forms — everything felt distinctly different from contemporary souvenirs.

These objects seemed to carry the history of roads, caravans and the people who travelled them.

People and Traditions

The Berbers, also known as the Amazigh, are the indigenous people of North Africa. Their culture is rooted in deep antiquity and has preserved a remarkable variety of traditional crafts.

The patterns found on clothing, carpets, jewelry, and household objects hold special significance. Many motifs have been passed down through generations, remaining part of a living cultural memory.

Even the simplest objects can embody layers of history and profound meaning.

Mint Tea Over the Valley

After walking through the village, we climbed to one of the terraces overlooking the valley and its old earthen houses.

In Morocco, tea is more than a drink. Mint tea is a gesture of hospitality and an invitation to linger, talk and share time.

Sometimes it is precisely in such moments — sitting on a terrace and watching everyday life unfold below — that the character of a place becomes most tangible.

The Art of Berber Jewelry

Berber jewelry is one of the most distinctive forms of traditional art in North Africa.

For centuries, jewelry has served several purposes at once: it adorns the body, offers protection and communicates something about a person, a family or a community.

Symbols and Amulets

Many traditional pieces were worn as protective amulets.

Common motifs include:

triangular pendants;

geometric symbols;

amulet containers for protective texts;

motifs associated with protection from the evil eye.

Each element carries its own meaning, rooted in ancient beliefs and traditions.

Materials and the Caravan Routes

Silver has traditionally been one of the principal materials used by Berber silversmiths. It held particular importance in many North African and nomadic traditions.

Jewelry was often combined with:

enamel.

Many of these materials reached Morocco through the extensive caravan networks that connected North Africa with regions south of the Sahara.

Encounters with artisans, old shops, textile patterns and traditional jewelry gradually become part of a visual memory.

Berber jewelry is particularly striking in its expressive character: substantial forms, silver softened by age, coral beads and protective amulets. These are not simply decorative objects, but part of a much larger history of culture, craft and memory.

It is precisely these encounters — a chance discovery in an ancient village, a conversation with a craftsman, a piece of jewelry found in a small shop — that remind us that the most compelling objects are shaped by tradition, time and human hands.
